Should i vaccum the stairs?

my dad insisted on carpeting the stairs against my wishes, even though he asked my opinion. I said all the dog hair collects and if it's carpet I'll have to vaccum it instead of sweeping. well now he's screaming at me to do as I'm told and I'm an ungrateful sob because I pretty much said no. I said I told you not to carpet it and i don't like to vaccum stairs. also, i didn't say it but if those stairs' problem is also dirt then it's definatly not from my heels, it's from my brother who works contruction.
